https://www.wool-aid.org/
Basically, it's a group for fiber artists that focuses on sending warm, durable clothes to kids in cold, often low-tech environments, like Tibet. We especially appreciate that they state outright that they "work with organizations that put the human imperative first; that provide aid regardless of the race, creed, or nationality of the recipients; and that do not use aid to further a particular political or religious viewpoint."
We also super appreciate the amount of thought and detail they've put into their requirements. For example, they require items to be made out of at least 80% wool for warmth, and they forbid the use of acrylic (even as an accent or a mix-in) because it's very flammable and many of these kids live in environments that require open flames for cooking and warmth.
Have both a $25 off coupon for the craft store and room to get reimbursed by our workplace, so we are seriously considering picking up a few skeins of dark wool yarn and working on some sweaters on the side. It is nice to be doing useful things.

Date: 2021-02-08 04:20 am (UTC)With crochet, we don't have to wrack our brains over whether our language is appropriative or whether we're racist/ableist/etc for not navelgazing enough or in the right way. We don't have to agonize over whether we are secretly and irredeemably bad. There's just the next stitch, and the next, and the next... and at the end, you get something that will keep someone else warm.
