(this did severals over on fedi so it's probably worth crossposting here, even if it doesn't quite meet my standards for a "finished" essay)

sometimes while trawling plural spaces, I see folks posting about how they feel "useless" and like they aren't "doing their job," and the framing is always something along the lines of "my role is [protector/caretaker/Some Other Noun], so it's my job to [Do Thing], but I haven't been able to do it for [entirely understandable reasons], so I feel like I'm a bad [protector/caretaker/Some Other Noun] and that my existence in the system is pointless"

and... this is just reminding me of why my headmates and I have a personal vendetta against the concept of system roles as they're so often used in the community. because very often, roles are used in a very prescriptive way, where being a protector/caretaker/Some Other Noun is something that you are rather than something that you do, and thus Doing Your Job is the Reason for your existence.

when, you know, that's kind of a fucked up thing to put on yourself, you know? everyone should be allowed to exist without a Reason and without having to perform some Service to justify their continued existence. (and like, I get that in plurality, so many of us come into existence for some reason, but there's a difference between acknowledging your history and continuing to keep yourself in the box even when it's suffocating you, you know?)

and like. so often the things that folks are expecting themselves to do, 24/7, as their Role In The System are unrealistic and unsustainable. stuff like being The Functional One or The One Who Takes All Of The Pain Away or somesuch while the system is in living situations that are frankly untenable, like living under the thumb of people who tear them down day after day. and like, I get it, sometimes your options are limited because you're just a kid and the abusers who have you under their thumb are your parents and there are no fucking good options anywhere for kids to get out of bad home situations, and you have no choice but to tread water or to take the Devil's boat.

but I think that at the very least, it's worth acknowledging that this is treading water rather than any kind of viable solution, that Being The One Who Takes The Pain Away is an impossible thing to maintain forever, and that when you inevitably are unable to keep up the facade anymore, that is not a problem with you. you did not fail, your existence is not pointless because you couldn't keep up with an impossible demand into perpetuity; it is not you that needs to change, it is your living situation, even if the only change you can make right now is tiny, tiny. even if the only change is forgiving yourself for being a limited being, like all of the rest of us.

Still *absolutely* flattened, but resurfacing for a bit to share a neat thing we found: a free zine of poetry and practical advice for disabled people, by a disabled person.

'Your Life Is Not Over: A Book Of Apocalypses And How To Survive Them' is a zine for newly sick and disabled people (or people who have been here a while and are struggling), with poetry and practical tips.

The tips are the things I wish I'd known twenty years ago, which disabled people often have to learn on their own through painful experience, about dealing with doctors, rest, building systems to manage your condition, and more.

The poetry centres on the fact that we are told so few stories about what disabled lives look like, and they're almost always from abled people's imaginations. We don't get told the stories of adapting, having a happy life while still sick and sore and tired. I have tried to tell some of our real stories of coping with grief and rage and then getting on with living.'

Zine can be read online for free here: http://web.archive.org/web/20211201223646/https://www.hysteria-abdn.co.uk/fiona-robertson

A physical copy can be purchased for £5 (plus shipping) here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1114014672/your-life-is-not-over-a-zine-for-newly

Someone on Twitter was unironically spewing pseudo-intellectual right-wing bullshit, only for someone to absolutely roast him by taking his tweet and editing it into a conversation between Shadow and Sonic (yes, the hedgehogs) complete with voiceover.

Sometimes the Internet can be okay.

Yesterday, a game that some good friends of ours worked on came out. Introducing: Beast Breaker!

Beast Breaker is a turn-based, mouse-bouncing adventure. You play as a tiny warrior named Skipper, tasked with defending innocents from giant mosaic beasts that threaten to destroy everything.

The game combines satisfying pinball physics with tactical decision making. Pick a style of attack, line up the best angle, and launch! Watch Skip careen around the screen and break the giant beasts to pieces.

Along the way, you will meet a vibrant cast of characters who will help you craft equipment, master unique new fighting styles, and maybe even discover the origin of the Beasts...

It's made with intense love by a new indie studio made mostly of women and queer folks, and it's got hours of tactical gameplay, cute queer furries, and scathing commentary about the rich. What's not to love?

You can grab the game for $15 on Switch, and on PC/Mac via the Epic Games Store. (They do plan to release on Steam at some point but aren't sure when they'll be able to.)

If you're interested in the game but aren't in a position where you can spend money right now, I might be able to help you out! As long as you:

- Own a Switch (because I can only do this for the Switch version)
- Live in the US
- Are an adult (18+)

then comment below letting me know! I have some spare $20 Nintendo eShop gift cards that I'm giving out to folks, free of charge with no obligation to repay. It should be more than enough to buy the game.

Because this is an honor system thing (I have no way of knowing if you use the card for something else), I reserve the right to be picky about who I give the cards to. If we've been chatting for a while and I know who you are, I'll likely be comfortable giving you a card! Conversely, if you're a brand new account with no posts, I'm not going to give you a card. Sorry.

Happy bouncing!

EDIT: We'll be doing this! Posts will be tagged as "nullification surgery" and access list locked, but please feel free to ask for access.
---

So, for folks not on our access filter, we had surgery yesterday! Specifically a genital nullification surgery from the AFAB side.

(Details underneath: TMI/genitalia/medical talk ahead!)

(End TMI)

From what we can tell, there aren't many resources on this type of surgery at all compared to other surgeries. We'd been longing after this surgery for literally as long as we could remember, but practically all of the information we found said it was incredibly rare, even dangerous, and that no trustworthy surgeon would agree to do it because doctors don't believe in nonbinary people and it would be considered female genital mutilation. (Yikes?) We'd given up hope until incidentally lucking upon a trans-competent doctor who knew where to send us. And we'd like to pay it forward, somehow.

Basically: would anyone be interested in hearing about the process, recovery, where we got it done, etc? We'd probably access list lock it just in case, but are comfortable adding people - we're not too picky about who goes on our access list, it's mostly there as a sort of "logged in users only" filter. (Also have been playing with the idea of doing an anonymized Reddit AMA or Neocities/Carrd.)

And of course, huge disclaimer that this would only be from our perspective as a patient, and that we are not medical experts - but that should go without saying!

THE YARN HUNGER IS UPON US AGAIN

We've just discovered this absolutely gorgeous bamboo yarn that comes in a WHOPPING 48 DIFFERENT COLORS. FORTY. EIGHT. For context, it is HARD to find 100% bamboo yarn in a decent selection of colors, and here we've got the motherlode dropped on us!

What's more, this is yarn of a lighter weight than what we've been using right now. It does mean patterns would need to be adjusted and projects would take longer because you need more yarn for the same size, but it also means that we can combine two strands at a time for even more color variation! I'm drooling thinking about it.

We have too many expenses and too much yarn as it is to justify purchasing more, but HMM. SOMEDAY.

In an effort to get back into posting on this journal, mayhaps we will begin posting about what we've been playing? Just as a semi-regular writing exercise.

Today's topic:

Golden Treasure: The Great Green

Your father is the Sun. Your mother is the Earth. All beings are your prey. Rejoice.

An indie game about living as a dragon, from the hatching to adulthood. Set on ancient Earth, you hunt, explore, gather treasure, engage other dragons in contests of might and wit, and uncover ancient secrets long forgotten.

The gameplay is a mix of visual novel, RPG, and roguelite. You choose what you do a day at a time, and pick dialogue choices that you can pass or fail depending on your stats. There is only one save file which autosaves frequently, and deletes itself after you die three times, instituting a kind of permadeath - however, some bonuses you earn from playing carry on to your next save file, so you're a little stronger each time.

We're not really the type for roguelites, especially since dying here means having to go through all the past dialogue. (And there is a LOT of dialogue.) It's offset a little by the fact that you can choose to start a new game at certain chapter checkpoints, but admittedly, we ended up cheesing the game by manually backing up our saves and using an external program to manipulate our stats.* It did take away from the overall experience of the game, which is in part about the ruthlessness of life in the natural world, but if there's anything we hate in games it's having to redo our progress. That's definitely an us thing, though. Some people enjoy the punishingness of permadeath, and honestly, a sincere good for them!

And overall? The game is fantastic. The writing is fucking fantastic. It's very much written from a non-human perspective, down to the littlest details. (For example, GT's dragons have no concept or care for gender. All dragons are referred to with it/its pronouns, and while they have a concept of "Givers" and "Birthers" in mating, it's left deliberately vague which sex most characters are, including the player character. There's no indication of sex being associated with personality traits, gender roles, etc.) The writing style itself is somehow both poetic and primal - it verges on flowery at points, but it honestly feels right for a dragon.

If you're dragonkin/draconic, or just beast-otherkin in general, beware! This game is the equivalent of shotgunning spicy food and then writhing on the ground in pain and ecstasy. It is agony. It is transcendence. It will make you feel seen, and it will make you suffer.

If you're on the fence about trying it, there's a free demo that's the first third of the game, and it'll transfer any collectibles you get to the full version. The game also runs on a potato, or so I hear. Go for it!

Price: $19.99
Available on:
- PC and Mac: Itch.io, Steam

(Also, the game is somewhat mature - we'll put some content warnings in the comments.)

* We are strong proponents of the idea that if cheesing a game makes it more fun and accessible for you, go for it! As long as you're not taking money away from small devs (like unlocking paid DLC illicitly) or impacting how others play (like making yourself unkillable in PvP), it's really no one's business.

There's a tag for the plural community on Twitch now!

https://twitter.com/RammyOW/status/1405256527435505664

Image description for tweet: A screenshot of the tags list on Twitch, with the Plural tag highlighted. The description for the Plural tag reads: "For streams and content featuring the plural community."

For those who don't know, tags have to be manually added by Twitch, so this is huge! It means someone(s) petitioned for the tag to exist, and Twitch heard them and took them up on it!

Even more than that, there was already a tag for DID/etc before this, which means that not only did Twitch decide to add this tag, they added it instead of telling people to just use the DID tag, thus not lumping everyone into the clinical box.

It's a small thing, but the implications are exciting! We're going to do some digging and figure out who exactly made the request to have this tag added, if they're not anonymous.

A friend of ours recently got some gorgeous tattoos, which reminded us that we wanted to put Designs on our body as well, but with less commitment. So we went looking into temporary tattoos.

They've come a long way! We remember temp tattoos as being these flaky, tacky things that only stuck halfway and then came off in a few days, but this company makes tattoos that supposedly last weeks, look indistinguishable from the real thing, and are vegan/nontoxic/cruelty-free to boot. (Obviously we can't verify that last set of claims ourselves, but they have gone to lengths to post their ingredient list, which is a good sign!) What's extra exciting, though, is this pre-designed tattoo we found from them:

https://inkbox.com/products/ouroboros-dream?artist_name=ale-senz

it's the plural four circles symbol. Not 100% the same, and probably unintentional, mind you, but still! And it looks SO GOOD, too! @_@

We were thinking of designing our own tattoo and submitting it to be printed, since that is a thing you can do with this company, but maybe we'll get this one instead...

Valerie Halla, a queer/trans cartoonist, made a tweet about Pride that feels chillingly relevant to plural identity as well, and perfectly sums up why we've stopped using labels beyond the umbrella ones for both queer and plural matters:

https://twitter.com/valeriehalla/status/1399822015679193088

this is hard to say kindly, but i feel that there are some people who think that pride is the comfort of having a nice, dictionary-defined, socially-accepted box to live in, and not the righteous fury of fighting back against the machinery that tries to put you in that box

fascist sickos like "Gender Criticals" want you in a box and happy with your box and ready to defend the boundaries of your box and your right to live in a box because it makes it so easy for them to come around and start picking off everyone who's stuck outside without one

and maybe, the hope is, they can even get you to help -- by making you fear and resent people who challenge the neat little categorization schema you've invested yourself in! i see this happening so much already, among people just a few years younger than me -- it's terrifying!!

to be clear, i don't think it'll work. the fact of the matter is that when you don't belong, you don't belong. and none of us belong, friends. that's why we have pride. we say we're proud because we KNOW, whether or not we pretend we don't, that it's radical to love to be queer

being a radical, unacceptable, uncategorizable, unapologetic queer weirdo is a form of protest all on its own. belonging on exactly your own terms is the only kind of belonging that will ever matter in the long run. this is my politics and it will be until the day i die. love ya

Went trawling through the plurality tag on Dreamwidth and found a neat-looking project!

[personal profile] pluralsinmedia is a blog dedicated to cataloguing and reviewing plural (or pluralesque) characters in media. Their DW appears to be a mirror for the main blog on Tumblr, but it appears to be equally up-to-date.

While the project seems fairly new and there's no telling if it'll stick around or what direction it'll go in the long run, we're seeing a LOT of green flags from it that have caused it to pique our interest in a way similar projects haven't!

- An statement of inclusion from a neurodiversity/Mad Pride standpoint, and a refusal to entertain any wankery about what's Plural Enough.
- A statement that they aren't a definitive voice for the community, and that their blog isn't a replacement for research or dedicated sensitivity reading.
- A clearly defined scoring system that focuses less upon "this is the One Correct Way to write a plural character(s)," and more upon "these are the tropes in play in this story, and here's some notes on ones that may be distressing!"
- A rule that they will NOT be reviewing characters made by actual plurals, but that they will put them on the big character list.

As someones who regularly tear their hair out about marginalized folks browbeating other marginalized folks for not writing The Perfect Representation(tm), it's VERY encouraging to see this level of thoughtfulness for a project like this! We're looking forward to seeing more of their posts, and might submit a few suggestions of our own once they get their unreviewed characters list up.

Still armpits-deep in work heck, but surfacing momentarily to share an interesting article we came across:

https://aeon.co/ideas/what-we-can-learn-about-respect-and-identity-from-plurals

We have a big bone to pick with their statement that most DID systems wouldn't be considered multiple because "Plurals don’t just feel as though they are psychologically multiple – they believe that they are." (Under this definition, any plural pre-discovery or in denial is not plural. And how do you even account for situations where given members are deep in denial while others aren't? Also, there's the whole history of pushing integration on DID and ableism within the community and splitting hairs about who belongs where and ARGH.)

Also, their notation for individual system members. Not really a fan of the "part of one human being" definition, would much rather define it as "part of the collective within one physical body" or something similar. Would also much rather they used headmate or systemmate or something like that instead of the weird person with a little p that's hard to relay elsewhere.

Still, it's always pretty surprising to come across an article in a Publication(tm) that's not outright hostile and makes an attempt to understand. Kudos to them!
hungryghosts: A creature composed of many masks upon one shadowy body draped in a red fabric. (Default)
a perhaps unpopular opinion: it is important to allow people to choose, themselves, whether to call themselves plural, regardless of how Obviously Plural their experiences may or may not be

more and more, we are somewhat disenchanted with how plurality, the concept, is being entangled with the notions of plurality, the community. it seems that by calling yourself plural, you immediately become subject to a variety of demands. to determine and declare your trauma history, or lack thereof; to explain your suffering, or lack thereof, in gruesome detail; to submit yourself to be Sorted into an arbitrary -genic camp; to memorize and regurgitate ever-expanding vocabulary lists...

perhaps these are unspoken demands, but these ideas have become so prevalent that they have become demands, nonetheless. even we, several times removed from the community and spurning -genic words, feel their weight. in our time wandering outside the community and meeting questioning possibly-plurals, the thing that was most useful for them to hear was reassurance that whether to call themselves plural or not was *their* decision - that their experiences would still exist regardless of what terms were applied to it. that they were allowed to rest in their experiences without making Choices about what they were or weren't. that there was language if they wanted it, but that they were also free to find their own, or to embrace undefinability.

(this post brought to you by vague dissatisfaction over how many plural "101" resources contain long vocabulary lists of various -genic labels)

(also, hello, sorry for not being around for so long. we've been hovering around the higher levels of the emotional pain scale thanks to work. still figuring out what to do about it! but in the meantime we have disappeared into Games)

Well, we made it over a month before getting into a stupid pointless argument on the Internet.

It wasn't on Reddit, though, and given how crap this week has been, we'll let ourselves off easy. And in all fairness? "Humans are stupid, thank god I'm not one" is a blazingly bad otherkin take that, however understandable it is, really needs to be called out as such more often.

(Because yeah, humans do do some dumb shit, but we don't get to pretend we're not part of humanity right here, right now, in this lifetime, regardless of what other lives we have lived.)

We found a super neat symptom-tracking app:

https://bearable.app

It's made by people who are chronically ill themselves and understand the struggles of tracking your health. Unlike a lot of apps we've tried, which either require a lot of typing and thinking or are agonizingly simplistic, this one is BOTH super configurable and super simple to actually use on a day-to-day basis. The majority of the app is just tapping on preset options (which you can customize yourself), with optional spaces for specific times/notes/etc if you feel like going into detail.

There is a premium subscription you can buy, but it mostly just gives you access to personalized statistics (which we don't use anyway). Most of the core features are free. Your data is encrypted on their servers, they don't show you ads, and they don't sell your information.

Being super configurable does mean it's a bit overwhelming to set up at first. And unfortunately it's app-only, which means you're required to have a smartphone to use it. But it's a pretty neat resource and we've been able to stick with it longer than the other tracker apps we've used, and found it more useful! We hope it can help others as well.
